After years of waiting, Hinterland Studios finally released Episode 5 of The Long Dark's Wintermute story mode on March 31, 2026. Titled "The Light at the End of All Things," the episode concludes the epic survival journey of Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood.

Episode 5 takes place in two new locations: Perseverance Mills and the Suzuki Radio Telescope. The episode ties up loose ends from the entire saga, including the conflict with Mathis and his gang of convicts, the contents of Astrid's mysterious hardcase, the cause of the geomagnetic disaster, and Mackenzie's crucial message to deliver.
Both Mackenzie and Astrid are playable characters throughout the episode, switching perspectives as the narrative unfolds across multiple missions. The episode requires approximately 30+ hours of gameplay to complete if playing through all previous episodes first.
Long Anticipated Conclusion:
The final episode was delayed multiple times before Hinterland confirmed the March 31 release date in November 2025.
