Metro 2039 Finally Revealed - The Darkest Chapter Yet Coming Winter 2026!

After seven years of silence, 4A Games finally broke cover with Metro 2039, the highly anticipated next chapter in the post-apocalyptic franchise. Revealed during an Xbox First Look presentation, the game promises to be the darkest and most personal story yet.

The Story

Metro 2039 returns players to the claustrophobic tunnels of Moscow in 2039. The scattered factions that once fought independently are now unified under the Novoreich, a fascist dictatorship led by a legendary Spartan known as Hunter. You play as The Stranger, a recluse haunted by violent nightmares, forced back into the Metro he swore never to return to.

The Stranger is the series' first fully voiced lead protagonist, deepening immersion into Metro's iconic storytelling. Original author Dmitry Glukhovsky collaborated on the new story, though it's an original narrative rather than a book adaptation.

Shaped by War

The Ukrainian studio's experience during Russia's invasion directly shaped Metro 2039's development. Many team members worked amid drone strikes using batteries and generators. Glukhovsky, who fled Russia after being sentenced to eight years in prison for criticizing the invasion, poured those experiences into the game's themes of authoritarianism, propaganda, and the cost of survival.

What We Know

The brief gameplay tease shows Metro's signature handcrafted environments, stunning ray-traced visuals, and iconic weapons. Combat encounters feature returning Nosalises—ferocious mutant creatures resembling giant moles. The wristwatch mechanic makes a comeback as players must manage ammo and weapon maintenance.

Release Details

Metro 2039 launches Winter 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox App). A concrete release date hasn't been announced yet, but the franchise has a home on Xbox, making them the natural platform holders for the reveal.
