Top Gun 3 Officially Greenlit - Tom Cruise Back as Maverick With Script Underway!

Paramount Pictures officially confirmed that Top Gun 3 is heading into development. The announcement came Thursday at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where studio co-head Josh Greenstein revealed that the threequel has a script well underway.

Maverick Returns

Tom Cruise will reunite with producer Jerry Bruckheimer for the third installment. Screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who penned the massively successful Top Gun: Maverick, is back to write the script. Director Joe Kosinski's involvement is expected, though Paramount hasn't officially confirmed this yet.

The Maverick Legacy

Top Gun: Maverick became a cultural phenomenon when it released in 2022, earning $1.5 billion worldwide and revitalizing the theatrical market post-pandemic. Steven Spielberg credited Cruise with saving Hollywood's theatrical business. The sequel proved that audiences still craved the high-flying action and emotional storytelling that defined the franchise.

What's Next

With the script in development, filming is expected to begin soon, with a possible 2027 or 2028 release window. Glen Powell and Miles Teller, who played Hangman and Rooster in Maverick, are expected to return alongside Cruise. Producer David Ellison, now Paramount's owner, cited Top Gun 3 as a top priority for the studio.
